How Many Shingles Are in a Bundle?

A bundle holds 26 standard 3-tab shingles, or around 21 architectural shingles. Architectural bundles hold fewer because each shingle is thicker, and a bundle still has to be liftable.

The piece count is rarely the number you actually need. Shingles are sold and installed by coverage, at roughly 33 square feet per bundle and 3 bundles to a square.

Why the count changes between shingle types

A standard 3-tab shingle is a flat strip, usually 12 by 36 inches, and 26 of them fit in a bundle a roofer can carry up a ladder. Architectural shingles, sometimes called dimensional or laminated, are built from two layers bonded together. That extra material is what gives them their depth and their longer warranties, and it also means fewer fit in a bundle of the same weight.

Designer and premium lines go further still. Some are heavy enough that a square takes four or even five bundles instead of three, and the per-bundle count drops to match. If you are buying anything above a standard architectural shingle, read the wrapper before you work out quantities.

Those piece counts are the common ones, not a standard anyone is held to. Manufacturers change bundle counts between product lines, so the number on the bundle in front of you beats any table, including this one.

Order by coverage, not by piece count

Roofers talk in squares. One square is 100 square feet of finished roof, three bundles make a square, and each bundle therefore covers about 33 square feet. That relationship holds across 3-tab and architectural shingles even though the piece counts differ, which is exactly why it is the useful number.

Counting individual shingles only helps in one situation: patching. If you are replacing a handful of blown-off shingles rather than a roof, knowing a bundle holds 26 tells you whether you need one bundle or three. For anything larger, work in squares.

Getting from your roof to a bundle count

Measure the roof, not the house. A pitched roof holds more surface area than the ground it covers, and the steeper it is, the wider that gap gets. Multiply your footprint by the slope factor for your pitch before you divide by 100.

bundles = (footprint × slope factor) ÷ 100 × 3 × (1 + waste)

Waste runs about 10% on a simple gable, 15% on a hip roof, and 20% or more once valleys and dormers force angled cuts. Round up to whole bundles, and buy the extra from the same production run while you are there, since color varies slightly between batches.
