Wall blocks

Cap blocks

14blocks

Blocks per row

Total rows

Assumes a separate cap unit on the top row. Add 5-10% to the block count for cuts at corners and ends, and for the ones that break in handling.

How the retaining wall calculator works

A retaining wall is a grid: how many blocks fit across the length, times how many rows fit up the height. The top row gets counted separately, because it is almost always finished with a cap unit, not another wall block.

Formula: blocks per row = wall length (in) ÷ block width. Total rows = wall height (in) ÷ block height. Wall blocks = blocks per row × (total rows − 1). Cap blocks = wall length (in) ÷ cap block length.

Frequently asked questions

Wall length divided by block width gives blocks per row. Wall height divided by block height gives the number of rows. Multiply the two and you have the count, minus the top row, which takes caps instead. The calculator above does all of that and keeps the caps separate.

Most segmental wall systems use one. The cap is a different piece from the wall blocks under it, usually flatter and often a different length, and it's what stops the top course looking unfinished. This calculator assumes a capped top row.

5-10% on top of the count above. That covers cuts at corners and ends plus the ones that arrive cracked or get dropped. Block is heavy and awkward, and a second delivery for four blocks costs more than the four blocks.

Yes, enough to throw the count off badly. Width, height, and depth all differ by manufacturer and style, so a wall priced on one product's dimensions won't match another's. Pull the numbers off your actual spec sheet and put them in the fields above before you order.
