Why there is no dollar figure here

A dollar price per unit would mean very little here. Insulation is sold by the package, and what one package covers changes with R-value and stud spacing, so the same money buys wildly different amounts of wall depending on what you are buying. Our Insulation Calculator asks for coverage per roll precisely because there is no standard figure.

The index measures the material itself, which is the part that moves with the market instead of with your product choice.

The index is BLS series WPU139201, pulled monthly through the free FRED API. Percentages compare the latest month against the same month a year earlier, and against the 2024 annual average. Nothing is smoothed and nothing is estimated.

One caveat worth stating: a producer price index measures what manufacturers charge, not what you pay at the counter. Retail markup, freight, and local supply all sit on top and move on their own schedule. Use this to see which way the market is going, not to predict a quote.
