Flooring Calculator
The square footage and number of boxes of flooring a room needs, with a waste allowance set by your layout: straight, diagonal, or herringbone.
Boxes to buy
9boxes
Total with waste
169.4ft²
Room area
154ft²
Coverage bought
180ft²
Buy it all at once, from the same batch, if you can. Color shifts slightly between production runs, and a box bought three weeks later can be visibly off in the middle of a finished floor.
How the flooring calculator works
It starts with the room's square footage, adds a waste percentage to cover trimming and cutting losses, then divides by how much one box covers. Boxes round up, because that is how flooring is sold.
Formula: total area = length × width × (1 + waste% ÷ 100). Boxes = total area ÷ box coverage, rounded up to the next whole box.
Frequently asked questions
10% for a straight installation, 15% for a diagonal 45 degree layout, and 18-20% for herringbone. The pattern is what drives it. Angled cuts leave offcuts too short to use anywhere else, so the more angles in the layout, the more of each box ends up in the trash.
On the box label, in square feet. Laminate and vinyl plank usually land between 20 and 24 sq ft per box, but it moves with brand and plank size, so use the number on your actual product and not the default above.
Length times width, both in feet. That is the room's square footage, and this calculator does the multiplication once you enter the two dimensions, then adds your waste percentage on top. If the floor is not a plain rectangle, see the next answer.
If flooring goes in them, yes. For a room that is not a clean rectangle, split it into rectangles on paper, run each one separately, and add the square footage together before working out boxes. An L-shaped room is two rectangles. A bay window is a third.
